Solo: A Star Wars Story - first look trailer

"I've been running scams on the streets since I was 10..."

And with that we launch into the first look at the latest installment in the ongoing stories of the extended Star Wars universe. Solo: A Star Wars Story lands this May and this trailer will get people talking.

Our last visit to "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away" was Star Wars: The Last Jedi and it got a pretty hit-and-miss reception. No Star Wars film has ever been accused of being "meh", but this one ran the full gamut of reactions from adoration to bile-spitting fury.

Our last look to the stars before that was Rogue One, which was generally pretty popular and fits into the same "prequels to the main story" bracket which this new adventure does.

As the title suggests this focuses on the daring-dos of young Han Solo - he of wooing and marrying Leia before being killed by his son fame. But this is long before the rebellion, back when young Han was figuring out how to make the Kessel Run in less that 12 parsecs.

Even this teaser gives us more insight into Solo's backstory than we got throughout the original films - started as a con as a young man, kicked out of flight school...

The universe looks sumptuous and the action nips along, but the exciting thing here is a glance at the characters on offer. I'm going to say now, just from a single moment, Donald Glover's cocky smile and relax is perfect Lando Calrissian, Emilia Clarke and Woody Harrelson get to create from scratch, but all eyes will be on Alden Ehrenreich (so many journos and bloggers triple-checking that spelling today).

For me? He seems alright in these clips. He's not giving it Harrison Ford's iconic lackadaisical confidence, but he doesn't need to. For one, a Harrison Ford impression would be dull to watch and one also has to assume this Han Solo has a long way to go before he becomes that guy.

For now I'm happy to buckle in for the ride.
