Suiting up for the Emmys

The Emmys took place last night and, I'll be honest, for a while I thought my invite had got lost in the post. But then I realised two things:

  1. I never get invited to the Emmys

  2. Awards ceremonies are virtual this year, so no one is being invited - which means everyone is invited

So it was time to break out the tux and see if I remembered how to wear it.

The tux itself is courtesy of Next, whose suits have been a lifesaver for me for a few years now. They stock them in a small enough jacket size and short enough leg for those of us on the littler side.

Then it was time for the party. It was nice to see Schitt's Creek sweept the early prizes in its last season - and the fact they were having their own awards party was a lovely touch.

I've never sat down and watched the whole of the show, but I do love the Levy's and had to raise a glass to Dan Levy, yes for his Best Writer, Director and Supporting Actor gongs, but also for his impeccable Thom Browne skirt ensemble.

The evening was full of high moments. Ramy Youssef's video of the Emmy being taken away from his door after he didn't win was my favourite social media moment of the year so far.

If you haven't seen it, here is the video. Apparently every nominee was visited by an Emmy rep in a Hazmat suit with a trophy. If you won then you got the trophy, if not (as in Ramy's case) then they waved and walked away with the trophy.

Zendaya did not have the same problem. She became the youngest Emmy winner when she scooped Best Actress in a Drama Series for Euphoria. Her reaction was great and everyone joined in.

Then, Jennifer Aniston continued to win the internet. Fresh off her steam read through of Fast Times at Ridgemont High with ex Brad Pitt, she turned firefighter on stage during the early parts of the awards as she joined host Jimmy Kimmel at the live broadcast.

But the superstar then rushed home and was joined later via videolink, enjoying a Friends reunion with Courtney Cox and Lisa Kudrow at her house. "We live together Jimmy," Courtney chided and we all went wild.

As the evening started to wind down, we were treated to David Letterman's beard, Nicholas Braun's Crocs and Randall Pak's alpaca.

All in all, this year's virtual Emmy's continued TV's surge to the top of the culture ladder.

Here is the full list of winners. Now, who do I talk to about an actual invite for next year?
